Latvian mobile phone operators obliged to send SMS to residents abroad in crisis situations

BC, Riga, 19.05.2016.Print version
From now on, mobile phone operators will have to send SMS messages prepared by the Foreign Ministry to their clients in crisis situations, according to amendments to the Electronic Communications Law approved by Latvian Saeima in the final reading today, reports LETA.

According to the new bill, if an electronic communications company is notified by the Foreign Ministry that Latvia's nationals may be in danger in a foreign country, the operator will have to swiftly send to these clients a short message prepared by the ministry, the Saeima's Press Service told LETA.

In such cases, mobile phone operators will have the right to use information about the client's whereabouts without the person's consent.

Representatives of the Foreign Ministry said previously that the legislation was proposed in view of recent developments in the world and terror acts in Europe, in order to improve the information to the public about emergencies.

The new bill will come into force on June 13.
