The State Revenue Service carried out 643 inspections at various markets in Latvia in 2015, ascertaining violations in 93% of all inspections. In January-April 2016, the Revenue Service carried out 164 such inspections, but the proportion of violations has decreased to 85%, as the Revenue Service informed LETA.

During the regular inspections of Latvia's markets and street vendors, the Revenue Service often ascertains various violations, particularly during the summer.

Some of the most recurrent violations include sale of imported food products, vegetables and fruit that vendors claim to have grown themselves, missing documents confirming the country of origin of products, incorrect handling of cash registers, and unregistered business activity.

In total, 336 fines were imposed on vendors and retailers last year – EUR 86,600 in total. The Revenue Service also confiscated 4.8 tons of fruit and vegetables, which were then handed over to the Riga Zoo.
