Even though there had been no new African swine fever (ASF) cases registered among domestic pigs during last fall and winter 2016 in Latvia, the virus is still active among wild boars. In 2016, 411 new cases of ASF among wild boars have been registered which is three times more than in the respective period last year, informs LETA.

The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service reminds about the importance of biosafety measures to protect domestic pigs from the dangerous disease, especially in spring and summer, said the authority's representative Ilze Meistere.

"The high number of registered ASF cases among wild boars means that the virus is widespread and careless application of biosafety measures can not only bring the disease into the farm, but also promote its further spread in Latvia's territory," said Meistere.

The last ASF case for domestic pigs was registered in September 2015. In total in 2015, 213 domestic pigs had to be culled due to ASF, while in 2014 this number reached 564. The first ASF case in Latvia was registered in June 2014 in three wild boars close to the border with Belarus.

African swine fever is an extremely dangerous and contagious virus infection affecting pigs. If an infected pig is found in a farm all pigs in the particular farm have to be culled, which means big losses for farmers.
