Lithuanian public activists collect 50,000 signatures for alcohol restriction initiative

BC, Vilnius, 05.04.2016.Print version
A group of public figures aiming to submit a set of alcohol-restricting amendments to the Lithuanian parliament maintain they have collected in a few weeks 50,000 signatures, the number needed for lawmakers to address the bills, informs LETA/BNS.

"It is our aim to collect far more than that required by law. Clearly, the public and the political community are ready for the major changes that are needed to solve the problem of alcohol consumption," Juozas Dapsauskas, coordinator of the initiative, said in a press release on Tuesday.

According to the communique, the collection of signatures will continue throughout April.

The public activists referring to themselves as For Sobriety suggest banning alcohol ads, selling alcoholic beverages in specialized stores only and move the legal drinking age to a later age.

With the 50,000 signatures in place, the parliament should include the bills into the agenda.
