Lithuania’s 'Champezzo' brand banned due to similarity to 'Champagne' PGI

‘Champezzo’, a sparkling beverage brand of Lithuania’s alcoholic beverage producer Italiana LT, has been banned due to misleading similarity to ‘Champagne’, a protected geographical indication (PGI), the Verslo Zinios business daily reports on Thursday, cites LETA/BNS.

Asta Virbickiene, head of the Appeals Division of the State Patent Bureau, told the daily that the cancellation of the brand had been demanded by France’s Comite Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), the holder of the respective PGI.

CIVC believes that ‘Champezzo’ is misleadingly similar to ‘Champagne’ whose PGI status is recognized throughout Europe and beyond.

Sigitas Zaikauskas, Italiana LT CEO, says that the company will not suffer any substantial losses due to the ban in particular as the production volumes are low and marketing investment has not been high. He admits, however, that the company might contest the decision in court.
