Belevics: family practitioners in Latvia must comply with the quota system

BC, Riga, 08.10.2015.Print version
The public outrage over the proposal to limit state-covered health care services for patients who are recovering at private clinics was a result of "bad communication by the minister," this according to Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes", cites LETA.

Information about the plan has gotten ahead of the minister's comments about the main purpose of this idea, and thus led to misunderstanding, said Belevics.

He repeatedly stressed that the goal of the proposal is to make sure that health care services in Latvia be available to everyone. According to Belevics, because of co-payments, which in Latvia are higher than in any other European Union member state, 10% of Latvian residents are deprived of health care, while another 10% have only partial access to it.

Given the limited budget funds, there is only one solution – family practitioners must comply with the quota system. If they observe this system, then all patients will have access to health care services.

The minister reminded that about one-third of family doctors are following the quota system, while another one-third are not. Meanwhile, the remaining one-third of family practitioners are exceeding their quotas.
