African swine fever found in Rakvere pig farm in Viljandi County

BC, Tallinn, 06.08.2015.Print version
African swine fever was found in the Vooru Farm of AS Rakvere Farmid, the largest pig-farming enterprise in Estonia, on August 5th, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

The farm will be quarantined, all pigs will be slaughtered and the building will be disinfected. As of early August, there were 2,149 pigs in the Vooru Farm. This is the third ASF diagnosis in farms situated in the Viljandi County.

“We took the samples from the farm in the Tarvastu Parish on August 4, and received the confirmation today,” said the Director General of the Veterinary and Food Board Ago Pärtel on Wednesday. “This is the region where nearly half of African swine fever diagnoses on wild boars have been found, and that indicates that the concentration of the virus in the Viljandi County is very high,” he added.

CEO of HKScan Estonia Teet Soorm said that the incident will not affect the everyday organisation of work at the company, and all supplies will continue as planned, but firm measures will have to be taken in order to avoid transference of the virus to other farms.
