Trikata KS 55.36% stake in the Jelgava dairy company Latvijas piens has been offered to Arla Foods, an international dairy company that belongs to Danish and Swedish dairy groups, according to unofficial information obtained by LETA.

Arla Foods owns almost 80% of the Danish dairy market, approximately 15% in Finland, and about 60% in Sweden. The group has acquired dairy companies in Finland, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, taking the top position in the dairy markets of these countries.

At the same time, the largest Finnish group Valio, which consists of 10,000 farmers owning about 20 dairy companies in Finland and two in Estonia, is interested in Latvijas piens capital shares as well. One of the goals of Valio is to become the leading trademark not only in Finland, but also in Sweden, Russia, and the Baltic States.

After a government meeting on Tuesday, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs (Greens/Farmers) said that the new Latvijas piens shareholder could be a recognized group from Europe.

In assessing Latvijas piens odds, the minister indicated that there are three candidates interested in Latvijas piens shares.

The minister also said that Latvijas piens the government cannot get involved with the acquisition process in any way. The decision is up to the shareholders.
