Latvian AgriMin: EU-US trade agreement must consider all possible risks

BC, Riga, 19.05.2015.Print version
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union (EU) and the United States must be beneficial for both sides, at the same time keeping in mind the risks and preventing unfair competition after market liberalization, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs (Greens/Farmers) told LETA.

After returning from the United States, Duklavs said that Latvia stands for a thorough and in-depth, but at the same time, balanced agreement to have it beneficial and acceptable for both sides. However, it is important to consider not only the opportunities the agreement will provide, but also the risks regarding the agriculture industry.

"This sector is equally important for both sides, and mutual market liberalization should not distort competition, as it would leave a negative impact on Latvian businessmen," said Duklavs.

He also said that Latvia focuses on healthy food, livestock, and plant requirements, such as animal welfare, food production technologies, and practice.

"The outcome of the negotiations should not reduce EU's legislative requirements regarding veterinary and phytosanitary areas - the current principles on animal welfare, food production technologies, and practice must be maintained. This especially concerns the use of hormonal preparations in cultivation, gauze in food turnover, level of waste material, as well as turnover of genetically-modified organisms," the minister said.
