The number of Estonian dairy export markets increased by 19 countries in 2014; among the new markets, the biggest export was to Romania, which bought Estonian cheese for 0.9 million euros, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Estonian dairy industry sector had in 2014 a total of 51 export target markets, 19 countries more than a year earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture blog states.

The share of European Union countries increased in the milk and dairy products export destination countries to nearly 87%. Russia, which since 2009 was on the first or second position among the target countries, fell to fourth place (17.5 million euros).

The biggest milk and milk products market for Estonia is Lithuania (75.7 million euros), where exports grew by 24.4% last year. The growth came mainly at the expense of raw milk, of which 10% more was taken to Lithuania than in 2013.

In the second place was the export to Latvia (35.5 million euros) and third to Finland (24.4 million euros). Exports to both states were reduced by Russian export restrictions.

In total, milk and milk products were exported last year for 198.5 million euros (-4.9 million euros as compared with the previous year) and imported for 59.1 million euros (-1.7 million).

Among the new target markets, the biggest were Romania (0.9 million), followed by Malaysia (0.7 million) and Saudi Arabia (0.7 million). Fresh cheese was exported to Romani, whey powder to Malaysia and skimmed milk and whey powder to Saudi Arabia.
