Estonian and Latvian new Russian TV channels planning to cooperate

BC, Riga, 01.04.2015.Print version
The Estonian Public Broadcasting and Latvian public television signed on Tuesday a cooperation agreement for the joint development of Russian-language TV channels in both countries, Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) reports, cites LETA.

Both channels will remain independent in their programme choices and will focus on local life, but in areas where cooperation would result in a smoother result and savings, they want to find points of contact.

"It is clear that in Estonia, Latvia and other Eastern and Central European countries, the information space that comes from Russia and is created by Russian-language media needs to be balanced," said the chairman of the board of ERR Margus Allikmaa.

"The Russian-speaking population in these countries deserves a lot more varied high-quality journalism based on diverse sources, but also TV programmes that have much more contact with local life, for example. Estonia has decided to open its Russian-language TV channel, and the same is also planned in Latvia. As the Estonian and Latvian public broadcasting organizations have common objectives, any form of cooperation which will help improve the quality of the Russian-language information field is justified," said Allikmaa.

The cooperation agreement gives the two countries' Russian language TV channels a good opportunity for programme and film exchange, staff training and marketing activities.

ERR's Russian TV channel opens at the end of September this year. Latvian public television launches the Russian-language TV channel next year.
