The number of mergers and acquisitions in the Baltic countries increased by 61% in 2014, reports LETA, referring to the "Prudentia M&A Folio" report.

In 2013, there were 101 mergers and acquisitions in the Baltic countries, whereas in 2014, 163 merger and acquisition deals were registered.

The biggest merger and acquisition deal last year was the acquisition of the insurance company RSA by Poland's PZU for EUR 270 million.

The report also mentions Liepajas metalurgs, Amber Grid, Lietuvos Dujos and Citadele bank as the largest merger and acquisition deals in 2014.

35% of all mergers and acquisitions in 2014 were registered in the production sector, followed by real estate transactions (20%), IT services (17%) and trade (16%).

Although the number of mergers and acquisitions is expected to continue to increase globally this year, growth in the Baltic countries is likely to slow down or the number of mergers and acquisitions could even decrease, the report says.
