Latvian health minister: huge salaries and bonuses paid at Stradins Hospital

BC, Riga, 12.03.2015.Print version
Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital in Riga paid huge salaries and bonuses to employees, Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) said in an interview with the Latvian Television show "Rita panorama", cites LETA.

The number of employees at the hospital is inflated, while salaries and bonuses for the administration are significantly larger than those at the Riga Eastern Hospital. While other hospitals pay bonuses in the amount of up to 50% of the recipient's basic salary, Stradins Hospital paid bonuses in the amount of 100% to 600% of the person's salary. Furthermore, some bonuses were calculated on the basis of net salary, others – gross salary.

For example, the chief of staff was ready to work for a monthly salary of EUR 2,000, while her actual salary reached EUR 4,000.

Belevics also said that it is impossible to get hold of the actual financial situation at the hospital. When the hospital's former accountant was fired last year, she took all the accounting documents along.

As reported, Belevics had declared that he has lost his trust in Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital's board chairman Dins Smits. The Health Ministry's State Secretary Solvita Zvidrina told the press briefing that Smits is being released because "a number of things are unclear about the hospital's flow of finances, and problems with the construction of the new wing."

Belevics announced on Monday that ahead of any further action against Smits, the hospital's board chairman submitted his resignation.
