Latgale to have television channel in Russian

In order to protect Latvia's information space, politicians are planning to create a Russian-language television channel for Latgale province, the Latvian Television show "De facto" reported on Sunday, cites LETA.

Ministries' representatives have looked into various ways to encourage residents of Latvia to choose local television channels over Russian channels. One of the possible solutions could be a television channel for Latgale province – free of charge and in the Russian language. The idea supposedly comes from the Transport Ministry, yet the transport minister is denying this.

Other politicians claim that the idea of a television channel specifically for Latgale province is indeed circulating, however, the final decision is yet to be made.

Chairwoman of Saeima's National Security Committee Solvita Aboltina (Unity) told "De facto" that a task force has discussed measures to protect Latvia's information space, and a channel in Latgale might be only a small part of the solution.

Meanwhile, Culture Minister Dace Melbarde said that local television channels can successfully compete in Latvia's information space with localized content that focuses on the needs of the state or an individual region. She added that this is "media content which people identify themselves with, which tells about them, their life; content made by people who come from their environment."
