Jelgava Clinic chief Anna Ziverte charged in criminal case

BC, Riga, 26.02.2015.Print version
Zemgale Region Prosecutor's Office in Latvia has launched a criminal case against Jelgava Clinic Chief of Staff Anna Ziverte, according to information at the disposal of LETA.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement to the media that a Jelgava Clinic official had been charged in a criminal case opened following the State Audit Office's audit at the clinic for the period from January 2011 to December 2012.

The prosecutor's office informs that the unnamed official misused his or her position for material gain, and that the official's decisions caused losses at LVL 15,443 (EUR 21,973) for the state.

The investigation continues, therefore no further information will be released for the time being, the prosecutor's office declared.

Jelgava Mayor Andris Ravins (Greens/Farmers) told a press conference today that Ziverte resigned due to poor health at the beginning of February. Ravins has appointed Ruta Viesture as the acting chief of the clinic.

According to information posted on the Audit Office's website, Jelgava Clinic's funds were spent on purchases of items unnecessary for the clinic, as well as on catering services and alcoholic beverages bought by staff members on foreign trips, fuel, and arranging foreign trips for non-staff individuals.

Latvian State Television revealed about a year ago that Ziverte had dined at some of the finest restaurants of Latvia and Europe, shopped at the most expensive stores around the world, and traveled to popular tourist destinations, however, she only received a reprimand and had her salary cut slightly for a period of three months as punishment for her infractions.

For instance, Ziverte paid a bill of over USD 700 for a dinner in a restaurant in San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico, during which she and specialists from Germany were supposedly talking about urinary incontinence.
