Estonian-Georgian film "Tangerines" did not win the foreign language film Oscar

Estonian-Georgian cooperation film "Tangerines" did not win the foreign language film Oscar that was announced Monday night but the film's makers said that the very fact that it was nominated and they could be present at the gala, is very important, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Director of "Tangerines" Zaza Urushadze told Public Broadcasting that for two small countries, Estonia and Georgia, and for their film industry, it was important to be present at the Oscars gala.

 

Also the "Tangerines" executive producer Ivo Felt said that this is a pretty big deal to have the film crew in Los Angeles. "The fact that the (Estonian) Public Broadcasting has been able to bring its camera and microphone here, it is already a great achievement in itself. And when we add our film here, then it's all one piece of a really nice thing."

 

The Oscar and Golden Globe nominations that the film has earned has brought so much attention to the film, that no later than April, "Tangerines" can be seen in cinemas in the United States too.

The winner of the Oscar in the best foreign-language film category of films was Polish film "Ida".

 

Estonian-Georgian feature film "Tangerines" takes place in Georgia, Caucasus in 1992, during the Civil War between Georgians and Abkhaz and is director Zaza Urushadze's third full-length film. The main characters of the film are two men, descendants of Estonians who moved to Abkhaz a century ago, who are the last people in their village and find themselves taking care of injured soldiers from different sides of the conflict, trying to make peace between them.
