BC, Vilnius, 23.01.2015.Print version
On Thursday, 22 January 2015, the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania (LRTK) met with representatives of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK), which produces programmes of Russian TV channel RTR Planeta, informs LETA/ELTA.

The goal of the meeting was to inform the representatives of the VGTRK about the established legal violations and to demand that information that is not allowed to be published by law would not be disseminated in shows of the aforementioned TV channel.

Chairman of the LRTK Edmundas Vaitekunas emphasised that the commission is striving for information, which is broadcast in Lithuania, especially news, to be prepared observing the principles of impartiality as well as the law of Lithuania and the European Union.

The commission called for the VGTRK to guarantee that from now on programming will meet all legal requirements that it is subject to and that they will not be breached in the future.

The VGTRK said it is interested that its shows broadcast in Lithuania would comply with the law. Its representatives promised to relay the demands to the leadership and return an answer in writing.

As reported, on 7 January the LRTK received findings of independent experts in relation to the shows of Russian TV channels NTV Mir Lithuania and RTR Planeta that were broadcast in Lithuania. It was decided to launch negotiations with TV channels that committed repeated infringements.

RTR Planeta show Saturday News (broadcast on 15 November 2014) and NTV Mir Lithuania show Today (broadcast on 23 November 2014) were analysed due to numerous violations of journalist ethics. Such as, failure to observe objectivity, presentation of single-sided opinion and information unsupported by facts, purposefully biased context and propaganda. Broadcast of these shows breached Article 19 of the Law on Provision of Information to the Public, over information that may not be published, i.e. incitement of war and hatred, sneer, instigation of violence, dissemination of disinformation and information which is slanderous and offensive to a person or degrades human dignity and honour.
