After workers who are laid off from the Ventspils zivju konservu kombinats (Ventspils Fish Cannery) register with the State Employment Agency, the number of unemployed persons in Ventspils could increase about 25%, as Benita Salnikova, head of the Ventspils Office of the Employment Agency, told LETA.

At the end of November, the unemployment rate in Ventspils was 7.4%. After the Ventspils Fish Cannery layoffs, the rate could increase to 9.5%.

The company's management has said that approximately 80 out of a total of 400 workers will continue to work at the cannery in January 2014, the rest will be hired on a temporary basis and officially have the status of unemployed persons. These workers will be paid full social guarantees and benefits.

As reported, Ventspils Fish Cannery is planning to reduce output and lay off 400 workers in January due to the falling value of the Russian ruble. The company said it would adapt to the new situation and that its development would continue.
