Trade union: situation in Latvian healthcare will deteriorate in 2015

BC, Riga, 16.12.2014.Print version
Several indications suggest that the situation in healthcare will not improve next year; on the contrary – it will deteriorate. That is why people are considering strikes in order to draw attention to problems in healthcare, the head of the Trade Union of Health and Social Care Employees of Latvia, Valdis Keris said in an interview with the LNT show "900 sekundes" this morning, cites LETA.

"The situation is as follows: medical workers have to take into account that next year, their pay will be even less competitive, while patients will be forced to wait in long lines," Keris said.

Despite the fact that Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) promised EUR 30 million for the healthcare field, Keris believes that the said funding is insufficient, as it will not resolve long-time problems in the sector. "The new minister is competent and energetic, he sees the main causes of problems, yet he has been unable to allocate the funds necessary to solve these problems," Keris believes.

Keris was reluctant to say what decisions the Trade Union of Health and Social Care Employees of Latvia could pass at a meeting today, adding that the union will attempt to come up with something to attract public attention. He believes that Latvia's presidency of the Council of the European Union would be a good moment.

"A strike means that professionals working in the sector have reached their limit, and believe me, they have," Keris said.
