Estonian Riigikogu rejects the bill on direct presidential elections

BC, Tallinn, 11.04.2013.Print version
The Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu decided on Thursday to reject the draft law, submitted by the opposition's Centre Party MPs, that would have introduced direct presidential elections in Estonia, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

41 MPs were for the rejection, 18 were against the rejection and 9 remained neutral.

The law would have required changing the Estonian Constitution. According to the amendments to the Constitution that were proposed, the president would have been elected at free elections where a party or at least 10,000 persons with voting rights would have had the right to set up a candidate. The candidate getting over a half of votes would have been the winner.
