There are nearly 3,300 prisoners in Estonia

Estonian justice minister Hanno Pevkur noted that there are nearly 3,300 prisoners in Estonia now and that is too many, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Pevkur said in a speech at the 94th anniversary of the prison service that despite the fall of the number of prisoners in Estonia in recent years, the amount is still too big as compared to other European states.

Pevkur said that a punitive law revision will soon be completed at the orders of the justice ministry which analyses the current system of punishments. "Practice shows that just placing people in prisons may not always be the best solution. A suitable punishment and influencing system has to reduce the amount of repeat offences which is unfortunately still too high in Estonia," said Pevkur.

Pevkur said that after the committee concludes its work in the next few months, its conclusions will hopefully become a law. "One of the main keywords in the punitive law revision is balance of punishments," said Pevkur.
