7,104 people have received dual citizenship in Latvia after amendments to law

After amendments were made to the Citizenship Law in 2013, stipulating the opportunity to have dual citizenship, a total of 7,104 people have been granted the status. Dual citizenship was most often issued to children born outside of Latvia, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs informed LETA.

The said amendments came into force on October 1, 2013. They modified the dual citizenship issue, including the requirements for dual citizenship.

 

Since then, a total of 4,987 children born outside of Latvia, 1,600 exiles, and 162 persons connected with Latvian ethnicity, acquired Latvian citizenship. 279 people acquired citizenship in connection with their Latvian elementary or high school education. 76 people acquired dual citizenship after restoring their original citizenship.

 

The majority of applications came from the United States, Canada, Australia, Israel, and Russia.

 

The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs indicated that a total of 42 people acquired Latvian citizenship by October 31, 2014.
