Stoltenberg: Latvia will play important role in region's security in 2015

Print versionDuring its presidency of the Council of the European Union next year, Latvia will play an important role in the region's security, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after meeting with Latvian President Andris Berzins on Thursday, informs LETA.

Stoltenberg indicated that Russia has increased its military activity near NATO borders, therefore NATO member states must increase their defense budgets, which is also part of Latvia's agenda.
In discussing Russia's demands that Ukraine must not join NATO, he indicated that each country has the right to choose how it will defend itself. He also said that the rapid response plan, which was proposed during the NATO Summit in Wales, has already been initiated, and that it will be put into action quite soon.
As reported, Stoltenberg arrived on a working visit to Latvia yesterday.
