Lithuania has tabled the draft resolution, acting in its capacity as a rotating Chair of the Contact and Drafting Group, which drafts decisions on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Fourteen of the Council's 15 members voted in favour of the draft text, Russia abstained.
Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite, Lithuanian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, after voting stressed that this resolution was an important signal of the international community's support to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The resolution expresses strong support for the European Union and NATO's role in ensuring security and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"We are absolutely convinced that the Euro-Atlantic integration provides the framework and incentive for democratic reform, promoting economic growth, stability and peace," said Lithuania's permanent representative.
At the meeting, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Valentin Inzko called on the country's political elite to transcend their political and ethnic differences, because it would help improve the country's social and economic development, and move closer to Euro-Atlantic integration.
The members of the Contact and Drafting Group are the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the U.S.A., Russia, Luxembourg, Lithuania and Australia. Each of the members chairs the group in turn for one month.
