Vilnius City Municipality Council, which has dismissed Juozas Imbrasas from the post of mayor, and Arturas Liudkovskis from the post of deputy mayor, yesterday elected Conservative Vilius Navickas as the new Vilnius mayor.

Vilius Navickas.

Imbrasas does not recognize the sitting and the decisions made during it and intends to appeal against them to the court. Diarchy menaces Vilnius. The situation in Trakai district municipality is similar at the moment, informs ELTA.

Thirty members of the council voted for Navickas to become a mayor and one ballot was declared invalid.

Twenty-nine members of the city council voted for the dismissal of Imbrasas and two voting ballots were declared invalid. Imbrasas himself did not participate in the meeting.

Seven people supporting Imbrasas held a piquet near the municipality and raised placards with slogans "Do not Tread Democracy", "Your Goal is to Return Corruption".

Government representative for Vilnius district Jurgis Jurkevicius recommended not to overthrow the mayor at the Wednesday meeting, because the havoc caused by the election of the new mayor and the failure of the old mayor to withdraw may be very difficult to solve. According to Jurkevicius, there is no court practice for such matters.

The vote of no confidence signed by five groups in the municipality states that the mayor fails to ensure transparent work of Vilnius City Council, used his authority for the benefit of his party and fails to solve important issues. The new majority is to be formed by the Homeland Union – Christian Democrats, the Liberal and Center Union, the Liberal Movement, part of the Independent group and the Social Democrats.

The group of the political party Front, according to its leader Algirdas Paleckis, stands outside of all this and does not support any of the opposing parties.

According to the data available to ELTA, Liberal Centrists Gintautas Babravicius and Stanislovas Sriubenas, Social Democrat Romas Adomavicius and Vidmantas Martikonis from the Liberal Movement will strive to become a new deputy mayor.

It was foreseen to present the drafted municipality project in the mayor"s office before the start of the city council sitting and a consultation seminar "Successful Practice of Public Tenders" has been unexpectedly held in the sittings hall.

According to information available to ELTA, educators were invited to this seminar on Tuesday afternoon, despite it was scheduled to be held on Friday.

The newly forming ruling majority recorded vote of no confidence in Imbrasas, member of the political party Order and Justice, in Vilnius Municipality on Friday.
