Grybauskaite: riflemen's union is example of civic responsibility

President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite met with the leadership of Lithuanian Riflemen's Union to discuss the importance of the organisation in the light of escalating geopolitical situation and its readiness to defend the country, reports LETA/ELTA.

Having congratulated the leadership with the upcoming 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of the union (which will be marked on 20 September – ELTA) the president emphasised that Lithuania will be strong as long as its citizens are patriotic and ready to defend their homeland.

 

"As the geopolitical situation is becoming tense, the Riflemen's Union is playing a special role by summoning patriotic and active people who wish to contribute to the country's defence. It is a great example of citizenship," the head of state said.

 

Lithuanian Riflemen's Union unites people of various backgrounds and professions. According to the president, it is a great advantage of the organisation, which has to be used creatively not only in the face of military aggression but in the times of peace as well.

 

Lithuanian Riflemen's Union is a voluntary paramilitary civil self-defence association that aims to enhance national security by encouraging people to actively contribute to the country's defendability, ensure public safety, civic and patriotic development of the society. The organisation has approximately 7,000 members, of whom 800 joined in 2014.
