Estonian government supports additional sanctions against Russia
At the extraordinary session, the Estonian position was formulated regarding the restrictive measures that will be introduced following the destabilization of the situation that resulted from Russia's activities in Ukraine.
The restrictive trade measures cover trade with the Crimea and Sevastopol and investments made there, access to capital markets, defence industry, dual-use goods and sensitive technologies, including the energy sector.
Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet told Public Broadcasting's radio news that it is still too early to accurately predict the impact of the sanctions on Estonia. "The direct question is whether Estonia has something in these areas that Estonia exports to Russia. In most of these areas, Estonia does not have any significant exports to Russia. To certain extent, the issue can concern the financial sphere."
Paet added that sanctions may have more indirect effects. That if any of our important foreign trade partners are affected by these sanctions, it will concern also Estonia.
The European Union Council is planning to adopt the restrictions by the end of July.
