Mamikins from Latvia to be EP's main rapporteur on Georgia

BC, Riga, 17.07.2014.Print version
European Parliament (EP) member Andrejs Mamikins (Harmony Center) will become the main EP rapporteur on Georgia, as the EP Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats decided, cites LETA.

Mamikins' report will be dedicated to the European Union (EU) Association Agreement with Georgia before it is ratified in the EP. The report is to be drawn up this fall.

According to Mamikins, this decision means major responsibility to him. "There is an unwritten law that a newly-elected EP member usually does not get to the opportunity to prepare such a report," Mamikins explained, adding that this is also a signal that European Social Democrats have a high opinion of the Harmony political party and its experience in foreign affairs, especially in regard to matters concerning the Eastern Partnership.

As reported, three Latvian MEPs have joined the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, which includes Sandra Kalniete (Unity), Mamikins and Iveta Grigule (Greens and Farmers' Union). Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) has joined the Committee on Budget, but Artis Pabriks (Unity) – the Committee on International Trade.

Tatjana Zdanoka (Latvian Union of Russians) will join the EP Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, while Krisjanis Karins (Unity) continues operating in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, but Roberts Zile (All For Latvia! – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) – the Committee on Transport and Tourism.

Grigule will also work in the Subcommittee on Security and Defense.

The European Parliament assigns deputies to different political groups, following their own personal interest in the group.
