Estonian government agrees upon budgetary priorities for the next 4 years

BC, Tallinn, 11.04.2014.Print version
The Estonian government agreed upon the budgetary policy priorities for the next four years at the Thursday cabinet session, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The government's spokesperson said that the aim of the government is to guarantee Estonia's security, increase incomes and wellbeing, reduce poverty of children and keep the state's finances in order.

According to the base law of the budget, the budgetary position has to be balanced. The aim of the government is to reach a 0.2% structural surplus of the forecast GDP.

The next four year's budgetary strategy takes into consideration the activities of the new coalition agreement, which, together with additional measures, should have an effect improving the budgetary position. While according to the finance ministry forecast, the government sector budget would have been in structural balance based on the current laws in 2015, as the result of agreements made in the new government, the budget will have a surplus next year.

The nominal budgetary position will still be in deficit next year, caused by the temporary extra payments to the second pension pillar during the crisis era and spending pollution quota revenues that have been received earlier.
