Lithuanian private forest owners to reforest 1000 hectares of forest

BC, Vilnius, 28.03.2014.Print version
In 2014, the members of the Private Forest Owners Association of Lithuania will reforest 1000 hectares of forest, informs LETA/ELTA.

It is estimated that approximately 3 million of the saplings will be needed for such reforestation. The reforestation will cost about LTL 1 million (EUR 288 thousand) for the forest owners.

Forest owners will seek to cultivate hybrid – leafy and coniferous – forests that are more resistant to wind and various diseases.

The forest owner Vytautas Varankov notes that this year foresters are facing a shortage of seedlings. Very hard to get four kinds of the most popular seedlings – in large quantities they bought out and exported to foreign forest owners. Meanwhile, the small forest owners, who cannot compete with companies with foreign capital, have to settle for two-year- shoots, which is much more difficult to grow up.

According to the association, not including the annual reforestation work, in 2014 with the support of the EU will be planted about 4 hectares of new forests in places where before it was never done.
