Lithuanian Seimas ratifies Council of Europe Convention on Prevention of Terrorism

With regard to the President's decree and following the Constitution, Lithuania's Parliament has ratified the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism, reports LETA/ELTA.

This convention was concluded in Warsaw on May 16, 2005 to enhance the efforts of the states of the Convention in preventing terrorism.

 

The Convention establishes a criminalization of separate acts, which constitute preconditions for acts of terrorism, such as public provocation to commit a terrorist offence, recruitment for terrorism, training for terrorism. The countries are required to establish these offences in their national legal systems.

 

Under the Convention, the states are required to take necessary measures to prevent acts of terrorism, for instance, to improve and develop the cooperation among national authorities, to promote tolerance by encouraging inter-religious and cross-cultural dialogue, to encourage the public to provide factual, specific help to its competent authorities that may contribute to preventing terrorist offences.

 

84 MPs voted in favour for the ratification of this Convention.
