Mayor: Cesis would be ready to assume functions of Latvia's capital

BC, Riga, 22.10.2013.Print version
Symbolically, the town of Cesis is ready to become the capital of Latvia and assume the functions of a capital city, since the town has a sufficient historical background, Cesis Mayor Janis Rozenbergs (Unity) says in an interview with LETA.

Cesis has always been the leading town in Latvia. For several centuries, Cesis was the center of Livonia. The town also played a crucial role in the Latvian War of Independence. Cesis was the capital of Latvia for a couple of days. It was also the first branch of the Popular Front outside Riga, explains Rozenbergs, pointing out that Cesis has always played an important role in decisive moments and the town has been a turning point in history.

Cesis would like to assume the role of Latvia's capital and take pride in it, points out Rozenbergs. He believes that the town could become home to the President of Latvia, the Culture Ministry and the Education Ministry.

As an example, the mayor mentions the Estonian city of Tartu, which is now home to the Estonian Education Ministry.
