Lithuania’s Minister of Culture Sarunas Birutis admitted that the salaries of people working in cultural sector are too low, yet he did not said what concrete measures should be taken to solve this situation, informs LETA/ELTA.

On Wednesday, the Government considered the means to raise salaries for people working in cultural sector. Minister of Education Sarunas Birutis said he had a very clear position – salaries of people working in cultural sector are too low. The minister said his aim was to increase the salaries for cultural employees by LTL 244 (EUR 70.67) next year.

According to Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius, the decision of the Constitutional Court obliges the Government to restore the cut salaries for all civil servants.

"We were looking for the ways to increase salaries for people working in cultural sector for a long time. At present I cannot say how much (we will raise salaries – ELTA). The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Social Security and Labour and the Ministry of the Interior will have to make decision until Monday," said the prime minister.

On Wednesday, people working in cultural sector held a rally demanding that the Government would take decisive actions on the concrete agenda of salary increase for cultural employees. Minister of Culture Sarunas Birutis also attended the rally.
