Death penalty under discussion in Lithuania

After the cruel crime in Panevezys city, Lithuania's Speaker of the Seimas Vydas Gedvilas said that he would consider the opportunity of the death penalty to be restored in Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

"In my opinion, when such cruel crimes are being committed and when such criminals who commit such cruel crimes emerge, there is a need to consider the death penalty. If I am asked to vote, maybe I will support the death penalty," said Gedvilas while giving an interview on radio Ziniu Radijas on Wednesday.

As reported, on Saturday, the Panevezys Emergency Response Centre received a call from the woman who was locked in the boot. The woman claimed to be raped and asked for the help. The officers failed to locate the woman and after a half an hour the police officers received a call which informed them about the car on the fire. When the firemen extinguished the fire, the body of the woman was found in the boot.

On Sunday, Lithuania's Minister of Interior Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas highlighted that it was a need to find out why the police officers failed to locate the woman even if she called the Panevezys Emergency Response Centre.
