The government appointed Prison Administration's Resocialization Service head Ilona Spure, nominated by Justice Minister Janis Bordans (All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK), as the administration's new head today, informs LETA.

Spure will officially take her new job on July 18.

Previously, none of the ruling coalition parties voiced objections to Spure's nomination, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) told reporters after the Coalition Council's meeting on Monday.

Bordans believes that Spure meets the highest applicable requirements and is an intelligent, analytical and highly motivated official.

"This gives me every reason to believe that she will want to see these qualities also in her subordinates. Taking into account that the correctional system has been in need of positive changes for a long time, I am confident that these changes will be implemented under Spure, and they will be supported by the Justice Ministry," said Bordans.

The minister has set three main tasks for the new Prison Adminisrtation chief: to observe and maintain financial discipline and transparency in procurement tenders, foster the development of growth-oriented staffing policy, improve internal security at correctional institutions. One of the first objectives for Spure will be to perform an internal functional audit at the administration.

Spure has been working at the Prison Administration since 1995. She was the senior lecturer at the administration's training center until 1999, later she worked as senior inspector at the administration's social rehabilitation department, and she has been heading the administration's resocialization service since 2007.

Spure has a master's degree in pedagogy from the University of Latvia.

As reported, Bordans released the previous Prison Administration Chief Visvaldis Pukite from his job on June 28 following investigation in suspected violations in a public procurement tender.
