BC, Riga, 09.01.2013.Print version
On January 8th, 2013, the Riga District Court sentenced hardened criminal Janis Daugulis to life in prison for the gruesome murder of a pensioner, informs LETA. Daugulis was convicted of murdering the woman in 2008, cutting her body in several pieces and then throwing these body pieces in a reservoir near Riga.

As reported, the 64-year-old Daugulis was arrested in 2009 on suspicion of the murder.

The five-time convicted Daugulis was released from prison for a previous sentence on good behavior in 2008, even though he was sentenced till February 15, 2011.

It is important to note that Daugulis was released before Saeima had made amendments to the Criminal Law, which require additional and stricter review of cases pertaining to release on good behavior.

Daugulis led a lucrative gang in 1995 (along with Olegs Moisejevs), that regularly held up postal trucks and armored cars and robbed apartments. In one incident, Daugulis killed a man.

He was last sentenced in 2001 to 15 years in prison.
