Latvian Saeima bans political ads on TV 30 days before elections

According to amendments to the Law on Election Campaigning, passed in the third and final reading by Saeima today, political advertisements on television will be banned 30 days before elections.

The amendments will be in force 30 days before Saeima, local government and European Parliament elections in Latvia, writes LETA.

 

However, the new amendments will not affect the free airtime each party is granted on public television and radio.

 

Candidates will still be able to advertise meetings with their voters.

 

Furthermore, also 30 days before elections, local governments and municipal companies will also not be able to publish interviews with candidates, writes articles about them, or release any other similar type of election advertising.

 

These amendments to the Law on Election Campaigning are to come into forces on January 1, 2013.
