Lithuanian Seimas adopted over 200 laws in spring session

On 30 June, the Seimas of Lithuania closed its 8th regular spring session that opened on 10 March this year. During the session, the MPs convened for 56 plenary sittings and adopted over 200 laws, about 70 legislative documents, and 10 resolutions, the Office of the Seimas said in a statement.

During this spring session, the MPs focused on the strengthening of Lithuanian energy independence, development of a more business-friendly environment, reform of the social insurance and pension scheme, reduction of unemployment, stability of public finances, transparency in the public sector, and national security. Important decisions were also taken with respect to Lithuanian membership of the EU and the implementation of the rulings of the Constitutional Court, writes LETA/ELTA.

 

This session also heard the State of the Nation Address by President Dalia Grybauskaite and the Annual Report of the Government.

 

Following the Statute of the Seimas and taking into consideration the request of 55 MPs, Irena Degutiene, Speaker of the Seimas, convenes an extraordinary Seimas session on 16 July 2012. Its agenda contains only one issue, i.e. adoption of the Seimas Draft Resolution on the Calling of a Referendum on the Construction of the Nuclear Power Plant in the Republic of Lithuania.

 

On 10 September 2012, the MPs will convene for their last regular autumn (9th) session of the Seimas of the legislative period of 2008-2012.

 

Pursuant to the Statute of the Seimas, MPs meet biannually in regular spring and autumn sessions. The spring session opens on March 10 and closes on June 30. The autumn session opens on September 10 and closes on December 23. The Members of the Seimas convene for regular sessions without a separate invitation.
