The gradual increase of retirement age must be discussed and agreed upon within Latvia's society, Saeima Social and Labor Affairs Committee chairwoman Aija Barca (Unity) told LETA.

In January, this matter was discussed at the Welfare Ministry by various social partners, financial experts, researchers, NGO and civic society representatives. However, the sides did not manage to assume a joint stance, writes LETA.

This year, the committee will definitely work to amend the Law on Pensions.

According to the Welfare Ministry's proposed amendments, Retirement age will be gradually increased as of 2014.

It is planned that, to solve the issues related to society's aging, the current retirement age, 62 years, will be raised by three months in 2014 and 2015. From 2016, it will be increased by six months each year, reaching 65 years by 2020.

Retirement age for those with the rights to early retirement will increase similarly – to 63 years by 2020.
