Constitutional Court accepts Latvian MPs' petition contesting language referendum

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 12.01.2012.Print version
The Constitutional Court has accepted a petition, handed in by a number of Saeima members, which contests the status of the state language referendum and requests that the referendum, scheduled for February 18, be halted.

The Constitutional Court chairman's aide, Liga Paulina, told LETA that the document was registered with the court today, and that the court chairman would have to review the petition and decide, in three days, whether to forward it to a panel of three judges, which would then decide in three months whether to open a case or not.

If the Constitutional Court's panel of judges decides to open a case on the contested referendum, the court will have to take a decision on a temporary regulation, added Paulina.

As reported, the petition was signed by 14 Saeima members from All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, 15 from Unity, and one parliament member from the Union of Greens and Farmers – Iveta Grigule.

As reported, the referendum on granting the status of a state language to Russian is scheduled to be held on February 18.

A total of 771,893 votes will be required to make Russian a second official language.
