61,500 – 62,000 signatures have been collected during the signature drive for a referendum on government's decision to freeze benefits, Central Election Commission's Chairman Arnis Cimdars told Latvian Radio this morning. 153,232 valid signatures were required for the referendum to be staged.

Cimdars informed that, at the moment, the Central Election Commission is collecting data and will confirm the final results until June 19, reports LETA.

As reported, 52,000 signatures were collected from May 24 to June 14.

During the drive, the voters were offered to sign for or against the suspension of amendments to three laws: Law on the Payment of State Benefits from 2009 to 2012, Law on Maternity and Sickness Insurance and the Law on Unemployment Insurance.

The government previously decided to suspend lifting restrictions on sickness, maternity, paternity and unemployment benefits until December 31, 2014. According to the government's decision, if the amount of a benefit exceeds LVL 11.51 per day, the benefit will be paid in the amount of LVL 11.51 plus 50% of the amount in excess of LVL 11.51.

Therefore, LVL 25.83 million will be saved in the special budget in 2013 and LVL 26.42 million in 2014.
