Yesterday, Corruption Prevention Bureau (CPB) officers detained a high-ranking Finance Ministry official Vladimirs Vaskevics for bribing a State Revenue Service official. The latter was paid over EUR 50,000 to shirk his duties in control of contraband and tax paying, also to ignore wrongdoing on the part of others.

Even though the CPB does not reveal the suspect's identity, as sources imply LETA, he is long-time State Revenue Service and current Finance Ministry official, Vladimirs Vaskevics.

The CPB officers have carried out a search at Vaskevics' office in the Finance Ministry overnight and confiscated several documents and his computer.

As reported, Riga Regional Court is currently reviewing the criminal case against Vaskevics over committing non-submission of a declaration of income, property or transactions, or other declaration of a financial nature on the basis of a warning by those state institutions, which are entitled to request the submission of such declarations.

At the same time, Riga Regional Court is also reviewing the criminal case against three suspects in the murders of Latvian businessmen Genadijs Peredelskis, Gatis Aispurs, Aigars Lusis and the assassination attempt against Vaskevics.
