The political alliance Unity, following its board meeting yesterday, released the names of its official candidates for Cabinet posts in the to-be Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era) government in Latvia.

Selected for minister of finance is former SEB Bank economist Andris Vilks, but for economy minister – Artis Kampars (New Era), who is currently in the office.

Unity has nominated Civic Union leader Girts Valdis Kristovskis as minister of foreign affairs, Society For Different Politics' Artis Pabriks as defense minister and Aigars Stokenbergs from the same party as justice minister, informs LETA.

Interior Minister Linda Murniece (New Era) has been chosen to remain in office, but the Ministry of Culture will have a new leader – Sarmite Elerte (Civic Union).

Pabriks could also assume the new office of Assistant Prime Minister in preparation for Latvia's EU presidency.

As reporters were told by Kristovskis, the decision from the Unity board on allocation of the offices was unanimous. Asked why he himself is being nominated for foreign minister instead of defense, Kristovskis indicated that the choice was Dombrovskis', and that Civic Union trusts and supports him.

Solvita Aboltina, the New Era leader tapped for Saeima speaker, admitted that a "tough job awaits this team", and that advice and assistance will be necessary.

Stokenbergs said that he was pleased that Elerte, "her first time out in politics", has been nominated for a Cabinet seat. Current Minister of Culture Ints Dalderis (New Era) will surely be ready to help her.

Elerte herself had high praise for Dalderis' efforts during the economic crisis, and that he will be the "first and best advisor."
