Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 21.04.2010.Print version
The Constitutional Court has ruled that retirement pension cuts for prosecutors was against the Constitution, as Lina Kovalevska, aide to the Constitutional Court's chairman, told LETA.

The Constitutional Court opened the case following a claim filed by former prosecutor, now attorney Alla Ignatjeva, which said that the new provision contradicted the Constitution's Article 1 and Article 109, "Everyone has the right to social security in old age, for work disability, for unemployment and in other cases as provided by law."

The Constitutional Court ruled today that the pension cuts must be lifted no later than June 1 this year, and the pensioners must be reimbursed for the withheld pensions by no later than July 1, 2015.

The Constitutional Court's verdict cannot be appealed, it will come into force the day it is published in the government's official newspaper "Lavijas Vestnesis".
