Social Security and Labor Minister Linas Kukuraitis, who presented the proposal at the meeting, suggested that the government endorsed a respective legislative draft but pointed out that the Seimas should improve the bill.

Nauseda earlier proposed to provide one-off extra payments of 120 euros per child to families. Families with children with disabilities and those on low income would receive 200 euros per child.

In line with that proposal, payments would be transferred by July 31.

The Seimas is expected to debate the bill on June 2.

The majority of policymakers are in favor of granting additional support to families with children although some critics warn that this money would not necessarily go back into the economy through consumption and point out that those receiving extra payments would in this case include high-income households, which in fact do not need such money.
