Latvia, other EU members abstain in UN vote on Russia’s resolution condemning glorification of nazism

The third committee of the UN General Assembly on November 16th adopted Russia’s resolution condemning glorification of nazism, while Latvia and other EU member states abstained in the vote like in previous years, reports LETA/BNS.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry reported that the resolution on combating glorification of nazism, neo-nazism and other similar practices was adopted with 125 votes to two, with 51 abstentions. The US and Ukraine voted against the resolution.

The ministry said that neo-nazism is a problem in many countries in the world, and it is positive that Russia admits this fact as there are a number of active neo-nazist organizations in Russia. Still the EU members abstained in the vote due to several reasons.

Even though Russia has made several amendments to the resolution this year, the resolution still is one-sided and does not fully meet human rights standards. Also, the EU Member states could not ignore the broader context – Russia’s attempts to promote one-sided interpretation of history, including by whitewashing the criminal Ribbentrop-Molotov (Hitler–Stalin) pact, as well Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

The EU member states, explaining their stance, reminded that for many European countries the end of World War II did not bring freedom but occupation and more crimes against humanity committed against their people.
