Riigikogu discards bill seeking to stop ratification of border treaty with Russia

BC, Tallinn, 17.10.2017.Print version
The Estonian parliament Riigikogu on Tuesday decided not to support a bill initiated by the Conservative People's Party (EKRE) to stop the ratification of the border treaty signed with Russia, informs LETA/BNS.

Nine MPs voted for the bill, while 63 were against it and three chose not to vote.

The bill seeked to stop the ratification of the border treaty with Russia and to withdraw Estonia's signature from the treaty.

The parliament's foreign affairs committee, which had been appointed as the leading committee of the bill, on September 21 did not support the bill of the EKRE parliamentary group and suggested that the draft resolution be put to a final vote on Tuesday.

According to the Riigikogu Rules of Procedure Act, parliamentary groups can submit draft resolutions that include suggestions to the Government of the Republic.

The first reading of the bill on the ratification of the Estonian-Russian border treaty was concluded by the Estonian parliament on November 25, 2015. The border treaties were signed by the foreign ministers of the two countries on February 18, 2014.
