Daugavpils Mayor Elksnins ousted, Eigims elected

Eigims was one of those who proposed dismissing the previous Daugavpils
mayor, Andrejs Elksnins (Harmony). Eigims also was the mayor of Daugavpils, the
second largest city in Latvia, several years ago.
Although Eigims earlier said he was planning to create as broad a coalition
as possible, which could also be joined by Harmony members, ten Daugavpils City
Council members voted for Eigims today, while all five Harmony members voted
against him.
Eigims' new coalition is made up of six Latgale Party members and four
councilmen who were elected to Daugavpils City Council from Our Party's ticket.
However, none of these four is a member of the party and, for instance, Eigims
is a member of Latvian Farmers' Union.
Regardless of Elksnins and Harmony's hopes, all six Latgale Party
councilors and three Our Party members voted for Elksnins' ouster. On the other
hand, all five Harmony representatives on Daugavpils City Council voted against
sacking Elksnins, as did Livija
Jankovska (Our Party).
The municipality's extraordinary meeting was held following a petition
submitted by nine representatives of the Daugavpils City Council's new
coalition.
Three Our Party representatives on Daugavpils City Council have signed a
new coalition agreement with Latgale Party, which has six seats on the city
council and until now worked in opposition.
In total, there are fifteen councilors working on Daugavpils City Council.
