The watchdog receives 18 applications about possible pre-election campaign violations in Latvia

BC, Riga, 13.07.2017.Print version
The Latvian National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) has received 18 applications in relation to possible pre-election campaign violations in relation to the recent municipal elections, said NEPLP member Gunta Lidaka, cites LETA.

She said that complaints were made about a TV program chaired by one of the candidates, criticism of the work of the local government, programs and stories criticizing politicians, complaints about campaign materials in electronic mass media programs.

Lidaka also said that the applications surfaced several problems that media came across during the pre-election period, including about black campaigns, use of minorities languages.

The biggest issue, however, is reduction of traditional electronic mass media role and increased use of the new media – internet media and social networks. For example, Riga City Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony), MP Artuss Kaimins (KPV LV), Riga City Council lawmaker Martins Bondars (Latvian Alliance of Regions), and Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity) are active users of Facebook and Twitter networks in their communication with the voters.

Corruption Prevention Bureau representative Inga Jaunskunga said that the bureau has received 300 applications about possible violations, and is now revising them.

Latvia held municipal elections in early June.
