Prosecutor General's Office opens criminal probe over bribery in Daugavpils City Council
BC, Riga, 04.04.2017.Print version
The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a criminal investigation into an alleged bribing of a member of the Daugavpils City Council with LVL 200,000 (EUR 284,574) in return for his support to sacking the Daugavpils mayor in 2009, writes LETA/BNS.
Kristine Sutugina, a spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office, told that last week a prosecutor from the Department for Especially Important Cases decided to open the criminal investigation, overruling a decision to not start the probe, taken on March 9 by the Corruption Prevention Bureau’s investigator.
The criminal investigation has been launched over suspected bribery in an organized group, specifically for giving a LVL 200,00 bribe (EUR 284,574) to a Daugavpils councilor in return for his vote in support of sacking the Daugavpils city mayor.
The criminal case has been sent to the Corruption Prevention Bureau for investigation.
